Ordinary Time

Having checked the liturgical calendar to see what great church feast would coincide with my turn to write the newsletter, I was initially underwhelmed to find that we have apparently entered ‘ordinary time’, with the weeks identified by consecutive numbered sequences (or ordinals).
While this seemed something of an anti-climax after the vibrant festivals of Easter, Pentecost and Trinity, with nothing on the horizon until the feast of Christ the King precipitates the arrival of Advent, after further reflection I came to be struck by the emphasis which is placed by the church on spiritual growth, service and stewardship during this period.
This felt particularly apt given that it comes shortly after the election (and re-election) of members of the PCC and Deanery Synod, and of course the re-election of our long-serving and much cherished Churchwardens, Jeff and Mel, at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting.
I was delighted, and am extremely grateful, to have the very great privilege of being selected to serve on the PCC for the first time. I look forward to doing all I can to support St Martin’s important ministry, vibrant cultural and congregational life, and essential work towards social justice.
For inspiration I need look no further than the example of Richard Carter whose wonderful works we have celebrated while wishing him goodbye (temporarily!) at the Making My Heart Sing concert, and at last Sunday’s Eucharist service. Hearing more about Richard’s life of spiritual service and dedication to others while in discussion with Sam was a deeply moving and uplifting experience which will live long in the memory.
