Public Description (About this object)
A dark stone (possibly painted) fragment from a memorial, showing a complex heraldic crest, in 8 rows, halved to form 16 sections, with various insignia including a lion, thistles and birds. The crest has a wreath of fruit and flowers around it. It may be the crest of Sir Hercules Francis Cooke of Giddea Hall, and a fragment of a marble tomb and monument to William Cooke. The memorial is from the former St Martin-in-the-Fields church, 1544-1721.
Subject and Association Description
According to the Bob Speel website on Church Monuments, these are the remains from the spacious marble tomb and monument to William Cooke, son of Sir Anthony Cooke of Giddea Hall. This crest is apparently that of his son, Sir Hercules Francis Cooke. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Cooke_(of_Highnam) and http://www.speel.me.uk/chlondon/stmartinitf.htm
