Public Description (About this object)
Baptismal font in the north west side of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Used in the former St Martin-in-the-Fields church, 1544-1721. The font has a wooden cover with a gilded inscription: ‘This font was the gift of William Bridgem in 1689’. Tradition says that after 20 years of married life, Bridgem and his wife had a son and this font was a gifted to the church as a thanks offering. The font cover is stored elsewhere but the font is still in the north east corner of the church.
