Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Conrad Tao

American pianist and composer Conrad Tao joins the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a programme exploring innovation across American and Classical traditions.

“The kind of musician who is shaping the future of classical music” – New York Magazine

Ruth Crawford Seeger was a genuine pioneer: a composer of fierce originality whose music was decades ahead of its time, heard in Music for Small Orchestra. At the centre, Tao performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, alongside the world premiere of his new commission.  The evening concludes with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring (chamber version), evoking wide-open spaces and quiet resilience.

A Festival of Carols

Join St Martin’s Voices and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a festive spectacular for choir and orchestra, including Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells and The Twelve Days of Christmas alongside audience carols and orchestral favourites.

Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Stella Chen

Gramophone Young Artist of the Year 2023, violinist Stella Chen, joins the Academy of St Martin in the Fields to perform Beethoven‘s Violin Concerto. From its opening drumbeats, the work unfolds through wind chorales, warm string textures and orchestral climaxes, all shaped by Chen’s lyrical and expressive playing. Her recent recording of the concerto with ASMF showcases her clarity and poise.

After the interval, Caroline Shaw’s Punctum, inspired by St Matthew Passion, leads into Mozart Symphony No. 39, bringing the concert to a vibrant close.

TONUS PEREGRINUS Pre-Concert Workshop

Join Antony Pitts and TONUS PEREGRINUS for an intimate open rehearsal/workshop, gathered around a unique life-size facsimile of music from the Eton Choirbook, one of the greatest surviving treasures of pre-Reformation polyphony. Come and get up close to this magnificent manuscript in person, examining its original notation, text underlay, and illuminated capitals. The ensemble will rehearse and demonstrate some key works from the manuscript, discussing historical context, performance practice, notation and expressive choices. It’s a rare chance to explore the expressive freedom, soaring lines, and spiritual depth of these revolutionary pieces as they were originally performed – singers gathered around a single large manuscript on a lectern – and gain fresh revelations that prepare your ear and heart for the evening’s concert.

No preparation required, but book early – places are limited to allow intimate interaction and close access to the facsimile.

Part of TONUS PEREGRINUS’ visionary Opening The Eton Choirbook project.

ORA Singers: Spirit of Place

As part of its 10th Anniversary celebrations, ORA Singers & Suzi Digby OBE return to St Martin-in-the-Fields with a new programme – Spirit of Place – exploring themes of time, memory and how place shapes one’s identity.

The programme is built around three key works by a trio of our greatest living choral composers: The Lost Words by James Burton, setting the spell-poems of Robert MacFarlane, Five Childhood Lyrics by Sir John Rutter, and Kingdom of Mist – a major new commission by Gabriel Jackson taking its inspiration from The Fens.

The concert opens with another work by Jackson, his setting of To Morning by William Blake, which leads into a folksong from The Fens arranged by Michael Tippett. There are a series of choral folksong arrangements scattered throughout, alongside reflective gems such as Herbert Howell’s Even such is time and Samuel Barber’s little-known but gorgeous To be sung on the water.

They explore majestic works by Cristóbal de Morales, famed throughout Europe and in the New World, and the exquisite polyphony of Sebastián de Vivánco, whose intricately crafted counterpoint adorned services at the cathedrals of Ávila and Salamanca during the late 1500s.

Their programme also features spellbinding settings of words by Saint John Henry Newman: Sir James MacMillan’s Nothing in Vain for soloists and double choir and the world premiere of Kerensa Briggs’ Lead, Kindly Light, specially commissioned for the Choral Pilgrimage.
