100 Reasons for Living

On Wednesday evening, the church was packed with people eager to get their hands on a copy of Richard Carter’s new book, 100 Reasons for Living: The Diary of a Grateful Heart. I had the privilege of interviewing Richard about the book, and of listening to what inspired him to write this profoundly spiritual and enriching fragmentary autobiographical gem. As Rowan Williams says in the foreword to the book, and as Richard emphasised, more often than not the reasons for living are people, fellow companions on the road of his life who have revealed the presence, love, grace, and goodness of God. Richard’s disarming humility and generosity welcome the reader into an encounter with God, who is both the creator of all things and a close, loving companion who walks alongside us, no matter how difficult things get, no matter how many twists and turns there are on the journey.

I, too, have reflected on the people in my life who have become reasons for living, those who have shown me the wonder of God. I am particularly grateful today for Sherry Taylor, our Head of Ministry Operations, on her final Sunday with us in this role. She has been a true gift to the church, to the staff team, and to me personally. There are some people in this life who care so abundantly, shine so brightly, and love without ever counting the cost. That is Sherry. I have been blessed by her; we all have. And while she will be missed, I will forever be grateful to have had her as a companion on the road.
