The Liberty Lecture: The Right to Protest

Book

The foundations of democracy can feel solid – until they’re not. Around the world, we have seen how quickly democratic decline can take hold. Many are now warning that the UK is beginning to show similar signs. Debates over artificial intelligence, protest rights and freedom of expression are raising urgent questions about the kind of society we want to live in. Akiko Hart looks at the heat of the arguments, and what is at stake in these debates. She is Director of Liberty, the organisation that challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to make sure everyone is treated fairly.

Liberty, the Council for Civil Liberties, was formed to defend ‘the whole spirit of British freedom’ at a meeting in the Vestry Hall at St Martin in the Fields on 22 February 1934. We are thrilled to host this Liberty Lecture as part of our 300th anniversary programme.

Chaired by Sam Wells.

This lecture is also happening in-person. For in-person tickets, visit here.

The suggested price for tickets is £10 to cover our costs, but free tickets are also available so as not to exclude anyone who would like to come. All are welcome.

The Autumn Lecture Series is working with the European Festivals Forest to plant trees to mitigate our carbon footprint. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed and already planted a hectare of mixed woodland, banking 700 metric tonnes of carbon.
